The Quaboag Hills Community Coalition was established in 2014 to address the needs of people in our historically overlooked, under-resourced 15-town area at the nexus of Hampden, Hampshire, and Worcester Counties. QHCC's mission is to promote the health, education, and welfare of residents in the Quaboag Hills region of Massachusetts; to convene and facilitate collaboration among community development agencies, health, social service and educational agencies and governmental entities located in Belchertown, Brimfield, Brookfield, East Brookfield, Hardwick, Holland, Monson, New Braintree, North Brookfield, Palmer, Spencer, Wales, Ware, Warren, and West Brookfield; to help connect the residents of said region to needed health and human services and educational resources; and to conduct any other programs or means by which the organization can pursue the aforementioned purposes consistent with the lawful purposes, objectives, or powers of a corporation organized under Chapter 180 of the Massachusetts General Laws.
Our small but mighty 501c3 nonprofit organization is powered by a group of dedicated volunteers. Our current efforts include our Resource Hub, Community Fund, and Seeds of Hope. We provide information about services and related assistance via our website, monthly meetings, newsletter, and guide. In addition, QHCC is a 413Cares partner working to connect providers and users of services with the 413Cares database of resources. This is one way we increase access to needed assistance.
Seeds of Hope, a program that recently concluded, provided wrap-around care and stipends for EMT training. This program assisted rural youth, ages 17-24, in Worcester County (Brookfield, East Brookfield, Hardwick, New Braintree, North Brookfield, Spencer, Warren, and West Brookfield), Hampden County (Brimfield, Holland, Monson, Palmer, and Wales), and Hampshire County (Belchertown and Ware). The youth were not attending college and needed to begin economic independence despite barriers.
QHCC is a diverse group of community members, educators, service providers, town officials, and others who focus on social determinants of health. We provide a forum for social service agencies, civic leaders, community activists, and elected officials to learn from one another, address problems, and develop resources. For example, we partnered with the Foodbank of Western Mass and the Town of Ware during the pandemic to move the mobile food pantry to a new location that allowed food security assistance while following COVID safety measures. The Quaboag Connector, which we helped to establish in 2017, is a lifeline service addressing key transportation needs. The Quaboag Hills Substance Use Alliance, which began as a program under the auspices of our coalition, focuses on prevention and treatment.
